Address : Lorestan University of Medical Sciences,
Department of Virology, Medical School, Kamalvand, Khorramabad, Lorestan, Iran
The Department of Virology conducts both basic and applied research, focusing on the molecular biology and immunology of several different viral species, as well as the antiviral properties of herbal extracts. The Department is also investigating the epidemiology of virus infections in the population at a molecular level.
An important part of the Department's activities is dedicated to the University teaching, where the Department’s objective is reflected on various part of the medical teaching Curriculum. The training covers all aspects of virology courses and research including lectures, practical courses, postgraduate training, seminar, elective courses and dissertations. In keeping with the interdisciplinary nature of the virology, natural science students (e.g. microbiology, genetics, molecular biology) are also produce their dissertations and theses within the Department facilities.
Basic education in virology is organized for undergraduate students of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacology and BSc in Medical Laboratory Sciences, as well as for Nurses, Midwifery and other disciplines of Medical and Health Sciences degree.
Postgraduate degree program in Medical Virology: The Department also organizes postgraduate studies (Master and PhD) in Medical Virology. For thesis of other universities i.e. Islamic Azad Universities, who would wish to join our department and supervisors, we provide supervision and research facilities.
The viral diagnostics laboratory is also in The Hepatitis Research Center located in Shirkhargah area of Khorramabad City Center. There are special services offered by the Department, including the COVID – 19 Diagnostic Laboratory one of which has extensively used by the external customers (hospitals, laboratories, registered doctors) as well as research partners in the context of many research clinical studies.
The main themes of virological research include:
Diagnostics, molecular epidemiology, disease association and pathogenesis of Viral Hepatitis
Pathogenesis and innovative diagnostics of novel DNA and RNA virus diseases
Papillomaviruses and cervical cancer
Molecular diagnostics and pathogenesis of COVID-19 infections, HIV drug resistant , Viral Hepatitis Infections(HBV, HCV, HDV, HEV, HAV).
Emerging Viral Infections.
Viral neoplasm and association of human cancer with viral carcinogens.
Molecular interactions between viruses and their host cells, specifically in relation to cell signaling, viral evasion of host defense mechanisms and the effects of micro RNA.
Antivairal drugs especially herbal drugs research.
