Department of Pharmaceutical Control
Production of raw materials and pharmaceutical products in industrial and laboratorial domains is one of the major activities carried out by experts of this field. To guarantee the efficiency and safety of drugs, production procedure and ultimate products should be precisely examined in terms of quality. The training and research associated with this field and its development used to be carried out by exerts of pharmaceutics. Nonetheless, the board of pharmaceutical control was established in the middle of 2000s as a separate board, and certain Iranian schools of pharmacy began to recruit pharmaceutical control residents. Pharmaceutical control is an interdisciplinary field of study with certain connections with pharmaceutics, medicinal chemistry, biotechnology and statistics. Generally, pharmaceutical control is divided into two major sections, i.e. microbial control and physicochemical control. The courses of pharmaceutical control are presented to students within the framework of the PharmD program to train competent researchers who could undertake responsibilities concerning supervising and controlling drugs and pharmaceutical control as well as supervising the production and distribution of cosmetics and toiletries.
The courses offered by the Department of Pharmaceutical Control in the PharmD program:
- Microbial control of pharmaceutical products (theoretical and applied)
- Quality control (theoretical)
- Cosmetics and toiletries (theoretical)
- Physicochemical analysis of drugs
- Instrumental analysis
Research Priorities:
Conducting practical research and developing the boundaries of knowledge in the following realms:
- Using new methods for the analysis and microbial control of drugs
- Controlling the stability of raw materials and new or optimal pharmaceutical formulations
- Microbial control of drugs
- Analyzing and determining the amount of drugs via the microbial method
- Presenting new methods for analyzing pharmaceutical materials in pharmaceutical formulations and biological liquids
- Chemometrics and modelization of the data
- Detecting and reporting pharmaceutical and cosmetic cheating
- Controlling cosmetics and toiletries
