• Department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology

The emergence and development of biotechnology commenced in the twentieth century. The gradual development of this field of study has continued ever since. As a combination of pharmacy and biotechnology, pharmaceutical biotechnology is one of the most important branches of pharmacy which has been explored and investigated in many countries. This branch of science is basically concerned with the use of living cell systems or their derivatives to produce or modify relevant products through certain procedures. Currently, various products with distinct uses are produced and distributed using recombinant DNA technology. Pharmaceutical biotechnology covers a vast realm comprising various issues including the production of recombinant proteins and vaccines, primary and secondary microbial metabolites. Moreover, this field of study deals with biological conversions used for the production of raw pharmaceutical substances.

Goals and Mission: Initially, the revolution of biotechnology principally focused on the efficient and industrial production of recombinant proteins. The development of biotechnology with regard to proteomics and modern pharmacy and also new techniques used in molecular biology and genetics opened up new horizons for the technology of recombinant proteins engineering. The ultimate goal is to develop recombinant protein medications via modifying them for improving the kinetic profile and pharmaceutical dynamics. The result of this procedure will be the extension of the physical and chemical half-life of protein drugs, the reduction of protein immunogenicity, and alteration in the connection direction to receptors. These phenomena could be parts of a significant innovative strategy with regard to the economic aspect of pharmaceutical industry. This prospect indicates the significance of research and undertaking of appropriate strategies in this context.
