Clinical Skills Center


Introduction

The Clinical Skills Center, located atShohada Teaching Hospital of Khorramabadand affiliated with Lorestan University of Medical Sciences, provides an optimal environment for teaching and practicing essential clinical skills in medicine, nursing, and midwifery.

The center is equipped with a wide range of educational facilities designed to promote problem‑based learning, critical thinking, and hands‑on practice across the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains.

A variety of practical courses are offered at the center, including:

  • Principles and Clinical Skills in Nursing
  • Emergency Care and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
  • Physical Examination Techniques
  • Midwifery Principles
  • Pregnancy and Childbirth Practicum

 

The Clinical Skills Course

This course consists of 1.5 practical credits in nursing clinical skills and is offered to first‑semester undergraduate nursing students. Instruction is based on simulation‑enhanced, flipped learning methods.

Learning Structure

  • One week before each session, electronic materials (videos and PDF files) are uploaded on the website for self‑study.
  • During class, students work collaboratively for 90 minutes using simulators and mannequins to practice core nursing skills under the supervision of the instructor and teaching assistant.
  • The instructor primarily observes, answers questions, clarifies concepts, and provides feedback.
  • After a 20‑minute break, students repeat the same skill for another 90 minutes to reinforce learning through peer and instructor feedback.

Course Objectives

Overall Objective

To familiarize students with holistic clinical care of clients in a simulated environment while adhering to professional standards, regulations, and ethical principles.

 

Specific Objectives

A) Psychomotor Domain

Students will be able to:

  1. Learn and practice principles of effective communication with clients using simulated patients.
  2. Apply infection prevention and isolation principles.
  3. Perform nursing care related to wound management.
  4. Provide basic care and personal hygiene to a simulated patient (mannequin).
  5. Perform nursing care related to elimination needs.
  6. Implement nursing care related to nutritional needs.
  7. Provide nursing care for respiratory needs.
  8. Measure, interpret, and chart vital signs and their normal ranges.
  9. Practice correct body mechanics, positioning, and safe patient transfer using simulated patients.
  10. Learn and correctly administer non‑injectable medications.
  11. Learn and correctly administer injectable medications.
  12. Perform intravenous infusion and phlebotomy techniques using simulators.

B) Affective Domain

Students will:

  1. Respect the client as an individual with legal and ethical rights.
  2. Learn proper communication techniques before performing any procedure.
  3. Prioritize patient safety in all actions.

 

C) Cognitive Domain

Students will:

  • Learn nursing abbreviations and theoretical principles relevant to each clinical skill.

 

Operating Hours

The Clinical Skills Center is open Saturday to Wednesday, 08:00–15:00.

Learners may access the center’s facilities with prior coordination.

 

Rules and Regulations

All learners are required to follow the center’s rules. These include:

  1. Punctuality is essential; students must enter and exit the center at scheduled times.
  2. Wearing the appropriate uniform and name badge is mandatory.
  3. Professional and ethical behavior must always be observed.
  4. Equipment must be used responsibly and handled with care.
  5. Cleanliness and order must be maintained within the center.
  6. Silence and a calm atmosphere should be respected.
  7. Students are not allowed to enter preparation rooms, treatment rooms, or storage areas.
  8. Use of the center must be coordinated by the instructor or student representative.
  9. To reinforce infection‑control principles, students must not sit on the beds.
  10.  At the end of each session, beds must be arranged and all equipment returned.
